Behold, America! Inspired Lesson Plans

Institution: The San Diego Museum of Art
Project: Faith Ringgold-Inspired Painted Story Quilt
Grades: Elementary; K – 5

Create a printed, mixed media, fiber work representing a unique moment in one’s personal experience. Projects will take inspiration from Faith Ringgold’s autobiographical work Seven Passages to a Flight (1995) and use images and text to artistically express a personal story.

Project: Symbolic Story Map: Identity
Grades: Middle School; Grades 6 – 8

Create a collaged map form using a combination of words and images taking inspiration from John Frederick Peto’s work In the Library (1900). Combine symbols and words to reveal personal perception and create a visual interpretation of the title of Peto’s work.

Grades: Middle School; Grades 6 – 8

Learn how Iana Quesnell conveys her identity through mapping in Triptych: Migration Path (2007). Examine how the work’s subject is spatially located within its environment. Work collaboratively to create a map that provides insight into personal identities and connections to place.
